Several communities in New Jersey are protected today by a combination of soft and hard solutions (beach nourishment, groins, bulkheads, and dunes), and many communities employ several of these methods of protection. The result of human activity on the New Jersey shore has been an increase in the number of buildings subject to storm hazards, accompanied by a decrease in the role of natural processes of sand transport and storage on the islands or the likelihood that they will migrate.
